Amie Phinney is a life sciences executive and entrepreneur with more than 20 years of international experience spanning pharmaceutical R&D, biotechnology company creation, business development, and commercialization.
Amie is President & CEO of Defence Therapeutics, a publicly traded biotechnology company developing precision intracellular drug-delivery technologies. Headquartered in Montreal and recently expanded to Hamilton, Defence is advancing programs in antibody-drug conjugates and radiotherapeutics.
She is also a co-founder of Block Biosciences, a McMaster University spinout developing therapeutics designed to prevent cancer from spreading to the brain. As Block’s inaugural CEO, Amie helped establish the company, secure its foundational technology and early financing, and shape its development and commercialization strategy. She continues to support Block as a Board member and Head of Strategy and Business.
Amie began her career as a drug discovery scientist at Solvay Pharmaceuticals in the Netherlands and Abbott Laboratories in the U.S. She subsequently held leadership roles at AbbVie spanning R&D strategy, business operations, and alliance management. She later served as Chief Scientific Officer of Lakeside Discovery, a venture-backed alliance between Northwestern University and Deerfield Management, and as Senior Director of Partnerships and Business Development at adMare BioInnovations, where she helped advance technologies and build new Canadian biotechnology companies.
Amie holds a PhD in Biomedical Research from the University of Basel in Switzerland and an MBA from Lake Forest Graduate School of Management in the U.S. Her executive education includes Women in Health Initiative (WiHI) from OBIO, corporate governance at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management, private capital investment at the Ivey Academy at Western University, negotiation at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, and business leadership at UNC Kenan-Flagler.
Throughout her career, Amie has focused on bridging science and business to translate breakthrough discoveries into new therapeutics and biotechnology companies, work she continues through Discovery-2-Innovation, her life sciences consultancy supporting early-stage biotech companies, academic innovators and local start-up companies in her community.
